with Carla Lilyquist, Horticulturist
with Justin Blackwell, Garden Curator of Horticulture
Justin Blackwell is getting settled in as Lan Su’s new Curator of Horticulture over the past few months. For the past 20 years he has designed, built and maintained gardens after earning an associate degree in Landscape Design and Horticulture. Prior to coming to Lan Su, Justin was a gardener at the Portland Japanese Garden for 12 years where he gained further experience in pruning, garden construction and garden composition.
Carla Lilyquist has been a Horticulturist at Lan Su Chinese Garden since June 2017. She holds degrees in Horticulture from Oregon State University, Landscape Design from Portland Community College, and Biology and French from the University of Wisconsin at River Falls. Outside of Lan Su, she owns a pet sitting company, and also does landscape design and maintenance work on the side. Carla has been gardening in some way for most of her life, but really fell in love with plants while walking dogs and noticing the many fragrant plants that bloom in the winter, especially wondrous to a native of Minnesota! In her free time, she enjoys running around with her little dog Oreo, growing food and flowers, camping and river swimming, foraging for mushrooms and other wild edibles, making wine, rock hunting, and seeing live music.
Mandi Lynn Atkinson is the Assistant Curator at the Lan Su Chinese Garden. She has been digging in gardens since 2003. Mandi is a graduate from the University of Kansas, a Master Gardener, and holds more horticultural certifications than what she can count on one hand. In addition to working at Lan Su, Mandi works as a freelance horticulturist, designer and as horticulture therapist for frail elders. She has tended the Lan Su Chinese Garden since 2010 and also manages the garden's lotus and chrysanthemum collections.
