Join musician Vivian Zhu as she demonstrates how to play the guzheng, a traditional Chinese stringed instrument.
Jiahua “Vivian” Zhu is a Chinese zither musician originally from Shandong, China. At age 13, she passed the Level Ten Test, which is the top level in guzheng and gained a certificate issued by the International Examination Board of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music.
In 2015, Vivian moved from Shanghai to Portland, Oregon with her family where she began performing guzheng at local events and Chinese festivals. In 2016, Vivian received an opportunity to perform the classic guzheng tune, The Fishing Song, at a Chinese New Year event in Portland. The performance took everyone’s breath away and earned her a volunteer teaching position at the Bamboo International Chinese School. For the last two years, Vivian has taught more a dozen of students, both adults and children, to play guzheng and appreciate the culture of authentic Chinese music. The teaching experience has brought Vivian a lot of joy, but now she has a bigger dream: to introduce guzheng to more Portland local cultural organizations and to share Chinese music and culture with more people in the city she now calls home.
