Bao Bao first began serving delicious handmade steamed bao in June of 2017 at their 10th & Alder St. location in downtown Portland, OR.
Cart owners, Sabrina Zhang and Randy Richardson first met in Sabrina’s hometown; Luoyang, China, while Randy was teaching English. After moving to Portland they noticed a lack of authentic Chinese food, especially in the downtown food cart scene. They talked to Sabrina’s mother about the idea of a food cart and her mom mentioned baozi (the Chinese word for steamed buns). Throughout many parts of China, baozi shops can be found on nearly every street and are a common choice for breakfast or a quick on-the-go snack.
Combining their mutual love for food, cooking and entrepreneurship, Sabrina and Randy decided to quit their jobs and book flights back to China to pursue their baozi dream. Back in Luoyang they interned at a local baozi shop and also spent time at Sabrina’s home developing their skills and recipes before coming back to Portland to open Bao Bao.
They currently sell baozi out of their cart and do delivery for large orders. In the future they hope to expand to include a mobile truck and a brick and mortar location.
Traditional lantern viewings close out Chinese New Year festivities when the garden glows with hanging red lanterns and the lake reflects the light of large illuminated lantern sculptures.
