The Silk Road is one of history’s most influential and important territorial routes; yet, despite its significance much of its past is shrouded in confusion. Many of the so-called “facts” about the Silk Road are often ambiguous or, at the very least, incomplete. Upon deeper examination, its story reveals itself to be more complex and intricate than we initially think. In this lecture, Trevor Howell, a student of Asian history, traveler, and educator, will help us look more closely at the Silk Road as well as demystify some of the more common myths surrounding it. This lecture aims to help formulate a more comprehensive and holistic conception of what the Silk Road has meant to so many civilizations and cultures, as well as what its revitalization might mean for us today. Come explore an array of traditions, languages, and peoples, and learn more about this most fascinating and intriguing span of world history.
This event is included free with membership or admission; no registration is required.
Trevor Howell has been a student and educator of Asian languages and cultures for over ten years, with a particular focus on Central, South, and East Asia. After graduating with a degree in Literature and Chinese from Georgetown University in 2009, he spent four years in Henan, China working in university education. Trevor’s original interest in the Silk Road began when it coincided with his study of Buddhism and its expansion and influence across Asia. Trevor first delivered this lecture series last year while working here at Lan Su Chinese Garden as a coordinator and researcher in the Programs Department. He now works full-time in education as a member of Huntington Learning Center in Beaverton.
