With names, phrases, and pictures carved into stone and stamped in red ink onto their artwork, this craft is kept alive today by calligraphers, painters, and seal carvers.

February 11: Dan Lucas
Dan Lucas was born and raised in Oregon. In college he took a course in Asian art history and at first sight was intrigued by Chinese calligraphy. While working at the Portland Art Museum and then later, as a volunteer at Lan Su Chinese Garden, he made connections with the local Chinese community and found a teacher who taught him first calligraphy and painting, and then Chinese style seal carving. In 2011 he continued his study of seal carving at the National Art Academy in Hangzhou, China. Dan creates art using his Chinese name Lu Kesi. See more at www.lu-kesi.com.
