Empress Wu’s Women of Infamy Trip to China

Poetry & Romance in Chinese Gardens: The Literati Elite’s Love of Beauty
Shanghai - Suzhou - Hangzhou - Guilin - Yangshuo - Longsheng - Shanghai
October 12-24, 2012

Join Lan Su Chinese Garden’s Empress Wu’s Women of Infamy trip to the Chinese gardens and landscapes that were considered “heaven on earth” for thousands of years in traditional China. Urban garden oases in the midst of the world’s then biggest and most cosmopolitan cities have a long history in China. Born out of the Chinese reverence for remote mountainous landscapes, the art of creating beautiful tranquil gardens was perfected over several thousand years.

The trip will visit the enchanting gardens of Suzhou and Hangzhou where this garden art form reached its zenith during the Ming and Qing dynasties. After visiting the gardens, venture into the landscape that inspired these gardens—to the Karst mountains along the mist-enshrouded Li River. This is a journey into the beauty and wisdom traditions of pre-20th century China. At the same time, experience 21st century China and how the Chinese people are re-discovering and incorporating these traditions in their lives.

This trip is for Empress Wu’s Women of Infamy members only—a women’s giving circle supporting Lan Su Chinese Garden.
